Introduction;
My name is Alexsia Harlan and I am a sophomore Elementary Education major at Bradley University. After I graduate, I hope to teach in a low-income, urban area in Chicago, IL. My life goal is to inspire students to love learning, to have the drive for a better life and to care about others. I have had many influential teachers in my life and I want to reciprocate the same thing to my future students.
Educational Background;
I attended a private school, Costa Catholic Academy, located in Galesburg, IL, from preschool to eighth grade. While attending Costa, we were required to wear uniforms everyday, which for me consisted of; a plaid skirt, a red, white, or navy blue collared shirt, white or black socks, and tennis shoes. My time at Costa was very enjoyable and I did well academically throughout elementary and junior high school. I graduated from Costa in 2015, then attended Galesburg High School from freshmen through senior year. In high school, I was placed in honors classes and remained in those classes until I graduated in 2019. After I graduated from Galesburg High School, I started my first year of college at Monmouth College as an Elementary Education major. I was enrolled at Monmouth for a year, until I decided to transfer to Bradley University and continue my major in Elementary Education.
Views on Education;
I believe education can be considered as anything that causes one to think more in depth, or something that allows one to acquire new knowledge. However, the most beneficial form of education is learning how to better oneself, the environment, and others. In order for one to obtain an education, one must be open-minded, in order to allow a positive growth mindset.
My personal views on education vary, depending on the topic. Although, a standpoint I am strongly for is open-air schooling. By allowing open-air schooling, students are able to physically see the outdoor topics they are learning about, while incorporating all other core classes. Nature is a school that provides more subjects than a concrete classroom. By breaking down those classroom walls, students will be able to explore the world around them in the most educational way possible.
Education Impacting My Future;
Education will always have an enormous impact on my future. I view myself as a "learner," which means I am willing to slightly adjust my personal views, decisions, and beliefs depending on the new information I acquire. Being a learner also allows me to yearn for new knowledge about various topics daily. I truly value education and I believe an education is one of the greatest accomplishments one can have in life. My love for learning and knowledge is what gives me the motivation to become the best teacher I can possibly be to my future students.
